  • Why I Built CNSTOPS — Starting from Shantou, Exploring China One Stop at a Time

    Hi, I’m Jangel.

CNSTOPS began with a very simple idea: I wanted a place to keep the journeys I have already taken across China.

Over the years, I have traveled independently to many parts of the country. Some trips were carefully planned, while others were more spontaneous. Some places left me with hundreds of photos. Others left only a few pictures but very strong memories.

When I look at a map of China today, many cities and regions are no longer just names to me.

They are places where I have walked, eaten, driven, waited for trains, watched sunsets, taken wrong turns, discovered unexpected streets, and experienced small moments that are difficult to find in a conventional travel guide.

I realized that I wanted to preserve those experiences.

But I also wanted to do something more useful with them.

That is why I created CNSTOPS.

The CNSTOPS identity: Shantou’s Xiaogongyuan pavilion inside a location pin.

A Travel Map Built from Real Journeys

CNSTOPS is not meant to be another website filled with generic lists such as “Top 10 Things to Do in China.”

The idea is much more personal.

I want the map itself to become the heart of the website.

Every stop on the map represents somewhere I have actually been. Click on a destination, and over time you will find different kinds of content attached to it:

    • travel notes
    • practical guides
    • personal memories
    • routes and itineraries
    • food discoveries
    • photographs
    • places I would recommend
    • and sometimes places I probably would not visit again

I usually travel independently, so many of the details I remember are exactly the things independent travelers care about.

    How do you get there?

    Is it worth staying overnight?

Which area feels better to walk around?

Is a famous attraction actually worth the time?

Where did I unexpectedly want to stay longer?

These are the kinds of questions I hope CNSTOPS can answer.

Not from a tourism brochure, but from real journeys.

The map-first experience CNSTOPS is being built to grow into.

    Why Start with China?

    China is enormous.

Even after traveling to many provinces and cities, there is still far more of the country that I have not seen than what I have.

That is part of the attraction.

For international travelers especially, China can also feel more complicated than many other destinations.

The maps are different. The apps are different. Payment works differently. Train stations can be enormous. Restaurant names may only appear in Chinese. Some of the best travel information exists on Chinese platforms that foreign visitors may never discover.

As a Chinese traveler, I naturally use many of these systems without thinking about them.

That gives me another reason to build this site.

I hope CNSTOPS can gradually become a bridge between how China is presented to visitors and how people actually travel here.

Sometimes that means introducing a beautiful destination.

Sometimes it may simply mean explaining which button to press.

    Both are part of travel.

    Why the Name “CNSTOPS”?

At first, the name is easy to understand:

    CN + STOPS

China, explored one stop at a time.

Every destination is another stop on the map.

But while designing the website, I noticed that the name had accidentally developed another meaning that felt surprisingly appropriate.

    CN = China

    ST = Shantou

OPS = Our Places & Stories

So CNSTOPS can also be read as:

China · Shantou · Our Places & Stories

That interpretation turned a short domain name into something much more personal.

Our Places are the locations on the map.

Our Stories are the memories, photographs, routes, experiences and travel notes connected to them.

And Shantou is where this project begins.

Our Places & Stories: a project shaped by journeys, memories, routes and discoveries.

So the name now carries three layers:

    1. Stops — every journey is made up of one stop after another.
    2. ST — Shantou, the starting point of the project.
    3. OPS — Our Places & Stories.

It was not something I planned from the beginning.

Sometimes the best brand stories appear after the name already exists.

Why There Is a Shantou Pavilion in the Logo

The location-pin icon in the CNSTOPS logo contains the silhouette of the pavilion at Shantou Small Park — Xiaogongyuan.

    I chose it deliberately.

Many travel brands use mountains, airplanes, globes or generic map pins. They look familiar, but they could belong to almost anywhere in the world.

I wanted CNSTOPS to have a real point of origin.

The Xiaogongyuan pavilion gives the logo that origin.

It represents Shantou, but it also represents something larger: every exploration has to begin somewhere.

For CNSTOPS, that somewhere is Shantou.

The yellow location pin represents destinations and movement. The route beneath the logo represents the journey continuing from one stop to another. The blue and teal letters keep the identity connected to maps, coastlines and travel, while the warmer yellow gives the brand a more optimistic and personal character.

The pavilion is a small detail, but to me it gives the logo a story.

It turns a generic travel symbol into our starting point.

Started in Shantou, but the Map Keeps Growing

CNSTOPS started in Shantou, but the map keeps growing.

I do not want to rush to fill the map.

Some destinations may eventually contain many articles and hundreds of photographs. Others may only contain one short memory.

    That is fine.

This website is intended to grow in the same way real travel does: gradually.

    One weekend.

    One city.

    One road trip.

    One photograph.

    One story.

    One stop at a time.

The map begins in Shantou and keeps growing, one stop at a time.

    What I Hope CNSTOPS Becomes

I hope CNSTOPS eventually becomes useful in several different ways.

For someone planning a first trip to China, it can be a practical guide.

For someone searching for places beyond Beijing, Shanghai or Xi’an, it can offer ideas.

For someone curious about how Chinese travelers actually explore their own country, it can provide a local perspective.

And for me personally, it can become a long-term map of places I have seen and memories I do not want to lose.

    That last part matters.

Travel photographs are easy to leave forgotten on a phone or hard drive. Routes disappear from memory. Restaurants close. Cities change. Small details that once seemed impossible to forget eventually become blurry.

By putting them on a map and turning them into stories, I hope to preserve a little more of each journey.

And perhaps those memories can also help someone else create their own.

There are still many empty spaces on the map.

That is exactly how I want it.

There should always be another stop waiting.
